Medical Travel Websites Cannot Be Proxy for Doctors

by VR Sreeraman on Dec 31 2007 6:45 PM

Medical travel websites should be a supplement and not a replacement to a visit to a doctor.

Going on trips can often be strenuous for older people. Many people consult their doctors before making long journeys. Now a day, they simply consult the medical travel websites. Though this seems to be convenient, as doctors usually do not have time for individualized consultations in these cases, it should be a supplement and not a replacement to a visit to a doctor.

According to an analysis of 100 medical travel sites by Stuttgart's Hohenheim University, older people should necessarily visit a doctor before going on trips.

Annette Schlegel, the doctor who headed the study at the Institute for Communication Research, however says that travellers can still find useful information on websites run by government-supported research institutes. Schlegel says that such sites are especially helpful for destinations where immunizations are recommended.

On the other hand, Commercial websites do not fare well in the study as many of them are incomplete and the information provided are outdated.
