Matthew Hawksley was back doing what he loved as he met his rescuers for the first time after taking part in a triathlon.
After having managed to cheat death eight times, Matthew Hawksley was back doing what he loved as he met his rescuers for the first time after taking part in a triathlon. Hawksley broke his neck after diving off a 15ft pier in Mullaghmore, County Sligo, Ireland. The water below was only three feet deep and apart from a broken neck, Hawksley’s heart stopped four times. When admitted to the hospital, the 26-year old survived a life-threatening MRSA and pneumonia and after discharge, he was diagnosed with testicular cancer which he has since been able to recover from.
Hawksley took part in the Mullaghmore triathlon and also visited the spot where he suffered the accident, meeting Angela Dunne and her husband Finbar, who along with other divers pulled him out to the beach and performed emergency chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation before an ambulance arrived 45 minutes later.
“I feel quite emotional in a really good way. I have shed a tear or two. I am incredibly proud that I got back here to take part in the triathlon within three years”, Hawksley said.
