A new survey carried out in New South Wales in Australia reveals that it is better for your mental health to be jobless rather than get stuck in a job you hate. Researchers from Australian National University’s Centre for Mental Health Research analyzed more than 4,000 people living in Canberra and Queanbeyan of New South Wales twice over a period of four years and asked questions regarding their mental health, employment status and conditions at work.
"Our work found that people in poor quality jobs -- jobs which were insecure, did not provide future job prospects or had high levels of strain -- had no better mental health than people who were unemployed,” said lead researcher Dr Liana Leach. "In fact, the research showed that people who moved from being unemployed into poor quality jobs were significantly more likely to be depressed at follow-up than those people who remained unemployed," Dr Leach said.
This research reveals that employment at all costs may not be such a good thing and that employers need to be aware of the risks posed to mental health of the employees.
