There is just single mental health bed in South Australia for every 100,000 people, which is reportedly the country’s worst rate. The national average of Australia is at 11. The amount of Government funding to NGOs which cater to mental health is also the lowest in the country. The number of mental health disorders in South Australia stands only after cancer and heart disease.

The State spending towards mental health has risen by 49% during the past decade, while in the case of federal spending, it is at 134%. As many as 25% of the children and 38% of the adults who suffer from mental disorders are in need of help. Carmel Zollo, the Mental Health Minister has revealed that she was paying more attention to making the future better.

The Government has been faulted by the Catholic Health Australia for neglecting the mental health problems in the country. In spite of the increased spending by the Government, the situation is still at critical levels. Even though there have been reforms, but it is not spread across the country evenly. The flexibility which has been displayed by the NGOs with regard to dealing with mental health has to be followed by the Government also.
