MERS Affects Another Doctor At Samsung Medical Center, Bringing Total To 185

A total of 13 medical personnel at Samsung hospital have contracted MERS virus during the course of the outbreak, including two nurses last week.

A doctor at the Samsung Medical Center in Seoul has been confirmed to have contracted the deadly MERS virus.

The 25-year-old female doctor has become the 185th person infected with the virus in South Korea.

MERS, a newly discovered respiratory disease, was recently reported in the Arabian region. MERS is caused by a virus similar to that causing common cold and other respiratory illnesses.

The country's first case was diagnosed on May 20 in the largest outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome outside Saudi Arabia, the health ministry said.

The gigantic hospital operated by the powerful Samsung business group now accounts for 90 out of 185 confirmed cases.

With the doctor included, the total number of infected medics at this hospital now stands at 13.

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome has claimed the lives of 33 people of 184 diagnosed with the virus in the latest outbreak in South Korea.

Following four days with no new cases, two nurses at the same hospital were confirmed to be the 183rd and 184th patients on Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Alarmed, health authorities immediately ordered 12 of 15 patients being treated at the hospital to be transferred to other facilities.

A 75-Year-Old MERS Patient In Thailand Declared Virus-Free
The Omani patient’s diagnosis last month was the first MERS case in Southeast Asia. Thailand now appears to be MERS-free after the patient tested negative for the virus.

The move was seen as another blow to Samsung Medical Center whose facilities have been shut down, except for those reserved for the 15 MERS patients.

The death toll remains unchanged at 33 with no fatalities reported over the past four days.

South Korea Reports Three New MERS Cases, Total Number of Cases Rise to 169
The three new MERS infections came a day after South Korea reported no new cases, raising guarded hope that Seoul was winning the battle to contain the virus.

Out of the 185 people diagnosed with MERS, 41 remain hospitalized while 11 of them are in critical condition.
