The Health Ministry alleges that negligence in a blood transfusion centre led to the death of four babies in Kazakhstan as well as the infection of at least 55 children and one adult with the HIV virus.
In a hospital in the south of the Central Asian state the children, and a mother, have been infected in the past few months. Officials are searching for over a dozen donors suspected of giving infected blood.The ministry spokesman Moris Abdulin said, "All our working groups, commissions and independent experts confirm what took place: negligence and failure to comply with medical norms. Questions of safety took second place in the blood centre."
As officials have been testing children for HIV in the region around Shymkent more and more infected children between the ages of two months and 10 years old has been revealed.
Although investigations by police are still ongoing no charges have been brought yet.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union the number of cases of HIV/AIDS infection levels have been steadily increasing, mainly among drug addicts and in prisons.
