In the carbon constraint world of today quest for new energy technologies assumes great importance in view of the inherent problems that exists in current energy systems.

In the carbon constraint world of today quest for new energy technologies assumes great importance in view of the inherent problems that exists in current energy systems.

Talking on “Prospects of EU-India S&T Cooperation in the field of Renewable Energy – a perspective for India,” Co-chair, India Dr. A. Ramachandran said because of growing concern about high oil prices, energy security and climate change has changed the focus on certain key areas of energy research around the globe.

In this context this workshop is timely and most relevant in the context of India – EU framework of S&T cooperation. Dr. Ramachandran explained energy issues have become complex as they are inextricably linked to various economic, social and environmental aspects of development. Many of these issues transcend national boundaries. There is growing awareness among all stakeholders of the compelling necessity for the world as a whole to make a transition to clean energy technologies.

Dr. Ramachandran appealed to incorporate a diversified portfolio of energy technology options along with the likely timeframe for the development and deployment, leading to sustainable energy pathways. He said renewable energy in India has made noteworthy progress under the stewardship of the Ministry of New And Renewable Energy but the overall impact remains relatively small. To make the share of renewable energy visible in the total energy makes, the national effort has to be scaled up several fold from the present level.

Earlier, opening this two-day Indo-EU Energy Research Workshop Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology said we have huge demand of energy whereas the supply is less and fossil fuels are decreasing. In this situation looking for renewable energy is not an option but it is necessity. Without putting any stress on environment and natural resources, we are looking forward to alternative renewable energy. Dr. Ramasami welcomed all delegates of EU Member countries, Scientists and experts and expressed hope that on this platform we will learn as well as share from each other and we will co-invest and co-generate values in the field of renewables.

Mr. R Liberali, Director of Energy, DG Research expressed his views on perspective from the EU and said that the joint statement of last years India-EU summit reaffirm our common willingness to strengthen our cooperation to jointly meet the serious challenge of climate change and energy security.

Within this context, he added that the joint action plan between India and the EU also stressed the importance of our S&T cooperation on low carbon technologies and in particular on new and renewable energy to achieve climate change and energy policy objectives. This will allow us to start a more focussed and concrete discussion and exchange of information on the areas of solar and wind technologies, biomass gasification and waste to energy.
