Near Field Communication(NFC) technology will make contactless payment systems possible for half a billion Americans as they use their mobile devices as travel tickets. Juniper Research reports that by 2015 the number of people using their mobile phones as tickets would increase with the NFC technology. Transport operators stand to benefit as this system would cut down operating costs dramatically by reducing cash transactions and speeding up waiting lines.
Of course this would mean upgrading mobile phone technology, as chipsets are needed for NFC to work. BlackBerry and Samsung are leading in this field as both companies plan to launch NFC-enabled and NFC-ready devices this year.
Again, since installing NFC equipment is quite expensive, transport systems in areas that do not have a form of contactless payment technology cannot benefit from this change. Nevertheless, contactless payments are in wide use already, so Juniper’s principal analyst, Howard Wilcox predicts an increase in the use of NFC technology very soon.
