A study by researchers at the University of East Anglia in the UK has found that consuming a moderate amount of alcohol may reduce the risk of gallstones.

The study indicates that alcohol reduces the cholesterol levels in bile, which is mainly implicated in the formation of gallstones. The study analyzed data from 25,000 men and women and found that drinking two units of alcohol per day reduced the risk of gallstone formation by at least 30%.

Lead author Dr Paul Banim, who is a specialist registrar in gastroenterology, said that alcohol increased the level of good or HDL cholesterol, which altered the composition of bile and thus reduced stone formation.

The details of this analysis were presented at the Digestive Disease Week annual meeting in Chicago.
