A new study by Markella Rutherford, assistant professor of sociology at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, says that modern children may be escaping responsibilities because they are not given enough chores to do.
The study called "Children's Autonomy and Responsibility: An Analysis of Child Rearing Advice" examined articles, advice and letters published in more than 300 parenting magazines from 1920 to 2006. The study found that teenagers were unable to take responsibility when it came to nursing sick relatives or even paying bills of the household.The study found that doing household chores disappeared from parental magazines in about 1980s and that the only chores that kids did was school work.
