More AIIMS Doctors Joining Hunger Strike Again

The protest by 15 resident doctors of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) against the passage of the OBC reservation bill in Lok Sabha on Thursday intensified with five more medicos joining on an indefinite hunger strike - Dr Anil Sharma, spokesman of the AIIMS Resident Doctors' Association, said.

'But the doctors would continue attending duty and services at AIIMS.' – Dr Sharma said.

However, AIIMS officials have banned any demonstrations, dharna and rallies within their campus.

Dr. Anil Sharma said: 'the passage of the bill providing 27 per cent quotas to OBCs in government-aided educational institutions, did not take into account the Veerappa Moily Committee’s report that had suggested implementation of reservation in a phased manner.' Medicos from other medical colleges and educational institutions have expressed their support to the AIIMS doctors.

In May this year, students from various medical and professional colleges, had stiffly opposed reservations. AIIMS had become the epicenter of a strike wherein medical services in the Capital had been paralyzed for almost 17 days.

However, patients at the hospital express skepticism as the word of the strike spread.
