According to a new study, organically-grown oranges have up to 35% more vitamin C than those grown in the conventional way.You may intuitively feel that organic produce must be better for you. Scientific evidence of nutritional benefits has been found in recent years. Researchers and chemists at the University of Texas have analysed organic oranges alongside those grown in the usual way.
They find the organic ones contain a three times more vitamin C, per fruit. This is despite the fact that a conventional orange is brighter and about twice as big. It's not clear why organic oranges are more vitamin C rich. The researchers think it may be to do with the fertiliser used by conventional farmers, which draws more water up into the fruit. So the vitamin content might be diluted. However, there's no real cost benefit to you - because the organic orange generally costs more. Hence the cost for an organic and an ordinary orange comes to the same.
