Morning Sickness - Nature's Way Of Ensuring Healthy Diet In Pregnancy

There might be a reason for all that morning sickness in pregnancy. Researchers say nature devised it to make sure that the would-be mother will not digest unhealthy foods.

High intake of sugar, alcohol, oils and meat were found to be associated with the vomiting in pregnancy, the researchers said. Researchers at the University of Liverpool analyzed 56 previous studies in 21 countries to arrive at these conclusions.

They report their findings in the Royal Society's Biological Journal. Until recently, morning sickness was viewed as an unfortunate event that every pregnant woman goes through, but recent findings say that its appearance could avert miscarriages.

"While there may be no particular harm in eating, say, meat, now that we have refrigeration and best before dates, our bodies may be pre-programmed by evolution to avoid these particular foodstuffs in the first trimester," said lead researcher Dr Craig Roberts. "It may be that the nausea women feel towards certain foodstuffs could be helpful, and that although it is inconvenient and miserable, their nausea could be nature's way of avoiding problems in pregnancy for both mother and fetus."
