A protein with morphine-like effects has been identified in coffee that has analgesic and mildly tranquilizing qualities, according to scientists at the genetics and biotech division of state-owned Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation Embrapa, and state University of Brasilia (UnB) scientists. Embrapa said, "The discovery has biotechnological potential for the health foods industry and could also help to alleviate stress in animals bound for the slaughterhouse."
