Mother With Supposed Dead Fetus Finds She Is Still Pregnant

Julie Brown, from Livingston has accused the NHS of giving false information since she discovered that she was still pregnant after undergoing treatment to remove a non-viable fetus. Doctors at the town's St John's hospital had told her that the fetus in her womb was dead.

After this she underwent a procedure to remove the fetus on July 13, but after three weeks she found she was still pregnant. "A scan on Monday showed my baby was still intact and growing healthily. I was confused, angry, worried and elated almost all at the same time," Mrs Brown told The Scottish Sun newspaper.

"I wanted to know how this had happened and I wanted to speak to a doctor not a midwife. But I was told he couldn't explain what had happened," she added. She also wrote to hospital bosses demanding an explanation. NHS Lothian has offered an apology and has launched an inquiry into the incident.

"I immediately wish to apologize for any distress to Mrs Brown and her family. We have not yet received a formal complaint but an informal investigation was launched as soon as her case was brought to my attention," said St John's hospital director of operations, Mike Grieve. "We will be contacting Mrs Brown on Wednesday to discuss what has happened and we will keep her fully informed of the outcome of our investigation."
