Mountain Biking Results In Serious Injuries

When viewed from the point of view of sport, mountain biking has always been considered safe in the past.

When viewed from the point of view of sport, mountain biking has always been considered safe in the past. But today it has become an Olympic sport, and major injuries have become quite commonplace. As many as three mountain biking injury cases have been reported by the SAGE Publications, which have resulted in cervical spine injuries, causing tetraplegia which is also known as quadriplegia. Only serious neck injuries have been reported in the research material published previously.

All the three riders involved in the major accidents in the report were aged between 38 years to 53 years, and the helmets received the full impact of the fall as they fell over the handlebars. All the three accident victims lost their ability of moving their limbs. Severe cervical spine injuries were detected in the subsequent CT or MRI scans. The causes of the accidents were reportedly preventable. There should be better awareness among the medical teams which attend to such injuries to enable proper diagnosis. If radiographs fail to detect such injuries, then an MRI scan should be made use of.
