Movie theatre owners in Mumbai that show 3D films have been directed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to either sterilize or dispose 3D goggles after reports that majority of patients suffering from conjunctivitis had watched 3D films. Last month has seen a number of 3D movies released in theatres including Pirates of the Caribbean and the recently released Green Lantern.
The chairperson of BMC’s health committee, Rajul Patel said that while the onset of monsoon has always been linked to increase in the number of conjunctivitis cases, using unsterilized 3D goggles has exacerbated the situation with over 35 cases being reported in the last week alone.
Stating that the BMC will be issuing notices to theatre owners, additional municipal commissioner Manisha Mhaiskar said, “We will issue notices by tomorrow to these theatres asking them to either dispose the goggles after using them once or sterilize them before second use.”
