In the United States of America, a lawyer- Peter Angelos, who won millions of dollars as compensation from the tobacco industry in Maryland, has announced that he is dragging Vodafone to court in a billion dollar suit. He is claiming compensation to cell phone users who are said to have developed brain tumours after using the instruments made by Verizon wireless. This case has raised eyebrows not only because of the high profile names involved but also because this will be a landmark case whatever be the verdict.
Vodafone has in the meanwhile announced that a British government funded study recently failed to prove that cell phone usage could cause brain tumours. Analysts are quick to point out that though there is no evidence as yet linking cell phone radiation to brain tumours, a spurt of legal battles are expected as more and more cases are detected. The lawyers of the legal firm, which has slapped the case on the cell phone manufacturer, have another version to say. They claim if the manufacturers had known about the harmful effects of the radiation emitted, then these people should be punished severely- they say. Whichever way the case goes, it is sure to open up a Pandora’s box and will also attract world wide attention. Because these days cell phones have become extensions of the human body!!!!!
