A partially damaged eye has been donated by a 19-year-old murder accused in the Indian State of Orissa. Biranchi Majhi, the donor is facing trial in a murder case. A daily wage earner from Burla town in Sambalpur District, Sandha had lost his right eye in an accident. He was operated upon at Veer Surendra Sai (VSS) Hospital in Burla.
Majhi's act has won many hearts even as he is lodged in the Bhabanipatna Jail and claims he is innocent. Majhi said three men had attacked him and snatched Rs.700 from him. So he killed one of them in self-defense."I sustained injuries in my right eye and almost lost vision during the fight," he said. "I had come to the VSS to treat this injured eye," he said.
"During tests, the doctor advised me to donate the damaged eye, as I could not use it," he said. "If my damaged eye would make anyone happy then I must go for it," Majhi decided.
Guna Sagar Dash, an associate professor who performed the operation, said: "I was thrilled when Majhi expressed his willingness to donate an eye."
"We conducted several tests and found his eye suitable for another person called Sandha. I along with my team carried out the operation at about 10 a.m. and successfully planted Majhi's eye in Sandha's," he said.
He said that the operation was successful and the condition of both the donor and the receiver was all right.
