The state medical machinery in Orissa has quickly swung into action after the number of deaths at Gudrigaon in Kandhamal district rose to 10 due to an as of yet unknown disease.

The problem came to fore when two people lost their lives on Saturday. The death toll shot up to eight after six more lives were lost on Sunday triggering the MKCG Medical College from Berhampur to send a team of four doctors to study the cause of deaths.

While the health officials earlier assumed that the cause could be cerebral malaria, tests conducted by the MKCG medical college revealed that the deaths could have been caused due to food poisoning, though the team is yet to official submit its report.

Experts from Regional Medical and Research Centre and other medical institutions are awaiting the results of the team which could lead to more experts descending in the area to study the exact cause.

The chief district medical officer (in-charge) Kandhamal, Jatin Patnaik said the situation was under control and that no fresh case had been reported so far.
