The National Audit Office has revealed that trauma services in England are not good enough and that many people are dying due to lack of proper care.
The NAO also said in its report that despite repeated calls for reform, trauma services do not appear to have improved over the last 20 years. Furthermore the death rate in the UK in patients suffering from major trauma is 20% higher than that of the US."There is unacceptable variation, which means that if you are unlucky enough to have an accident at night or at the weekend, in many areas you are likely to receive worse quality of care and are more likely to die," said Amyas Morse, head of the National Audit Office.
Majority of trauma victims do not get access to CT scans, surgery and rehabilitation, it added. The report also said that if trauma care was managed properly at least 400 to 600 lives could be saved annually.
Health Minister Mike O'Brien said that the government would be introducing regional trauma networks soon.
