A group of American scientists has discovered a naturally available preservative that can kill a large number of bacteria and keep the food fresh even after many years. Known as bisin, the preservative is produced by harmless bacteria called Bifodobacterium longum which is present in the human gut.
Researchers at the University of Minnesota said that the preservative can destroy a number of bacteria including E.coli and salmonella and preserve the food for a number of years.
Lead researcher Dan Sullivan said that it could be the best preservative available since no chemical is being added to the products. “It seems to be much better than anything which has gone before. It doesn't compromise nutrient quality — we are not adding a chemical, we are adding a natural ingredient”, he said, adding that his team has patented the preservative in the US.
