A towel was recovered from the stomach of a patient who had undergone surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), which has now launched a probe in the alleged case of negligence.

Gursharan Kaur, a west Delhi resident, had undergone gall bladder surgery July 27 at the country's premier institute. She, however, soon complained of pain and was again operated upon in a private nursing home.

Her relatives said that doctors found a towel in Kaur's stomach during the second operation.

Reacting to the allegation, AIIMS authorities said they were taking the matter seriously and had already ordered a probe.

'The AIIMS director has set up a committee comprising three senior doctors. They will investigate the matter and submit a report within two days,' said Shakti Gupta, professor in charge of media at the medical college.

'We came to know about the matter through media this evening and the committee will discuss all possible angles of the story telecast by a TV channel before reaching a conclusion,' Gupta told IANS.

'Appropriate action' would be taken against the concerned doctors and support staff if they were found to have been negligent, he added.
