New Breast Cancer Guidelines Not Welcomed by Women

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Massachusetts Medical School has found that the new guidelines for breast cancer screening have not been welcomed among women with more than 80 percent of them admitting that they are concerned over the guidelines. According to the recommendation by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), women under the age of 50 years should not be routinely screened for breast cancer while those in the age group of 50 to 74 years should be allowed to take just one mammogram every two years.

Researchers led by Autumn Davidson conducted a poll among 247 women in their 40s and found that over 80 percent of them were unhappy with the recommendation. The women also believed that breast cancer was more prevalent and thought that nearly 40 percent of women in the country could suffer from the disease, far higher than the 12 percent agreed by scientists.

“Indeed, they have been exposed to consistent and high profile media campaigns, endorsed by medicine and a variety of interest groups, that have indoctrinated them into the concepts that mammograms lead to early detection and early detection saves lives”, Davidson said.
