A new cancer drug is being hailed by researchers for its ability to target cancer cells and keep them from multiplying.
The drug being called ON01910 works by interfering with a molecule known as Plk1, which cancer cells need in order to divide and multiply. This molecule is found in higher numbers in cancerous tumors, and people with poorer cancer survival rates tend to have especially high amounts. The drug was tested on 94 different types of human cancers in the laboratory both individually and in combination with other cancer drugs. The drug was able to inhibit cell division and thus hasten the death of the cancerous cells. It also appeared to be safe.
The drug is being investigated by researchers from different parts of the world who are testing the drug in up to 56 cancer patients with advanced or terminal disease to see how it works in people.
