There have been sixteen deaths and 170 suspected cases of meningococcimia or meningitis in New Delhi in the last 90 days, according to health officials who are taking strict measures to check the spread of the disease. The Government and the MCD are making sure that family members and neighbors of infected persons are taking the proper doses of antibiotics.
"We are also distributing leaflets to educate people about the symptoms of meningococcimia like high fever, cough, throat infection, headache, stiffness and pain in the neck, vomiting and rashes on the body," Deputy Municipal Health Officer NK Yadav said, adding that if people noticed even two or three of the above symptoms, they should immediately contact their doctor. He also said that 173 cases have been reported since December and 20 deaths are suspected, although only 16 have been confirmed so far.
