A 14-year old Canadian teenager needing a heart pump can now go to her school along with her friends thanks to the next generation heart pumps that can be carried around in a purse. Kolby Zanier was fitted with a HeartWare pump back in August after she was diagnosed with severe heart and kidney failure.
On August 28, Kolby was fitted with the new pump following a five hour procedure and unlike the current generation of heart pumps, which require hospitalization, she can carry it around in her purse and go back to school.
The pump weighs just over 2 kgs and comes with a controller, batteries and spares. The pump allows her to run around and even play volleyball though swimming is not an option for the 14-year old.
