Losing sleep over laser surgery permanently damaging your eye? AIIMS has introduced a new reversible eye surgery to treat patients suffering from near or far sightedness through the insertion of small plexiglass rings into the cornea.
"A typical vision correction procedure using intrastromal corneal rings (INTACS) would involve making a small incision in the cornea of the eye and inserting two crescent shaped rings between the layers of the corneal stroma," Dr Jeewan Titiyal, Professor of Opthalmology at AIIMS, told PTI.The embedding of the rings has the effect of flattening the cornea and changing the refraction of light passing through it, he said. The new procedure is much better than the popular LASIK surgery as it does not interfere with the functioning of the eye.
"It is specially helpful for patients of post-LASIK ectasia, where the cornea becomes very thin and irregular," Titiyal said.
Moreover, the implants are removable in case a problem of incompatability develops in the patient. Among the many advantages of this technique is a lower risk of side effects, he said.
The new surgical procedure is being demonstrated at the ongoing national meet of opthalmologists at the AIIMS.
