A company in Israel, called Tactile Technologies had developed a robotic dental drill that can make the job of doing dental implants very easy for the dental surgeon. The drill is all set to bring relief to the patient as well by being faster, cheaper and less painful than the common manual procedure.

A dental implant is used to provide root to the artificial tooth, and is generally imbedded in the gum through a long and complex surgical procedure.

The robotic drill will first use a frame and a needle to send the impulses from the gum to a personal computer. The computer will then use the data thus collected with a CT scan to configure the drilling guidelines. The guidelines are then adjusted with the frame and at the press of a button, the robotic drill will do the fixing of the dental implant.

The organization had finished testing the new drill on animals and has the approval of FDA of USA to test it on humans.

Once the trials on human subjects are conducted successfully, the new drill may be an important step towards automated dentistry.
