Drug addiction is a problem because the addicts find it hard to break the habit formation. One of the reasons for this type of behavior may be that drugs affect the mechanism of the brain and makes the addict less attracted towards other rewards of life, like eating and fulfilling of other need, physiological or psychosocial.

This procedure when applied to mice has shown a reduced affinity for drugs, like addiction to cocaine. Moreover, such a procedure has also been seen to increase the appetite of the mice thus treated.

The latest procedure has showed that there may be a new treatment to deal with drug addiction through surgery in the subthalamic nucleus. Previous researches have shown that these procedures have been also effective for reducing the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease as well.

The results of the studies are published in the journal Nature Neuroscience.
