University of Otago's Associate Professor Tony Blakely and Dr Nick Wilson say that the New Zealand governments needed to set a time frame to erase smoking completely from the society since the death rates were getting out of control with each passing day. They said that almost half of those who take up smoking die because of it. The total death rates are close to 4500 a year.
