Newborn girl died after authorities at a government hospital in Jalandhar refused to continue providing life support system
In a tragic incident of hospital negligence, a newborn girl died after authorities at a government hospital in Jalandhar refused to continue providing life support system as her father had not paid Rs 200 that was due. Sanjiv Kumar revealed that his daughter had to be placed on life support as she was born premature and had jaundice. He alleged that the hospital authorities removed her from the life support as he was unable to pay the money required to keep her in a phototherapy unit.
“The child was diagnosed with jaundice and later shifted to emergency ward. She was put on life support. On Wednesday night, the hospital authorities told me to deposit Rs 200 as the electricity charge needed to run the incubator. I was unable to pay the money. Later, they refused to put her on life support system, resulting in her death last night”, he said.
While the Punjab government has ordered an inquiry into the incident, the hospital authorities rejected the allegations that they had intentionally removed her from the life support and added that the baby had lost her life due to asphyxia.
