A recent health statistic has shown that GPs are going overboard in prescribing over-the-counter painkillers to patients, leading to an expenditure of more than £440m a year on painkillers by the NHS. The analysis has pointed out that PCTs are spending thousands on over-the-counter painkillers as well as cold and flu treatments such as Lemsip, Beechams, Anadin and Panadol prescribed to patients.
Nearly £3,000 on prescriptions for cold and flu have been spent between January and June, and more than £59,000 on over-the-counter painkillers.
