According to the National Health Service (NHS) information centre the Scots are facing a severe backlog in trying to match the workload and the number of NHS dentist.
They fear that there would not be enough practitioners to satisfy public demand. The British Dental Association said that the NHS is forcing the dentists out. According to the figures complied by the NHS information and statistics division, it is found that there are 2367 NHS High Street dentists but this is 120 less than the number needed to cater the existing population.Andrew Lamb, British Dental Association director for Scotland, said that the shortage has caused a series of confusion and commotion among the people. Hence it is necessary to tackle the problem faced by the dentist and the common man today rather than training more dentists for the future.
Hence he called for a complete review of the existing system that handles the executive's recruitment and retention incentives thereby patients are not put to any hardships in accessing the dental care in the near future. Shadow Health Minister Shona Robison said that the Lib-Lab executive will not meet the needs of the NHS by 2012. But the Deputy Health Minister Lewis Macdonald said that the number of dentists who undertook their vocational training in Scotland is increasing.
