Northern Ireland’s health minister Michael McGimpsey admitted that nearly 4,000 jobs could be lost in the health services

Northern Ireland’s health minister Michael McGimpsey admitted that nearly 4,000 jobs could be lost in the health services in spite of a new bill that will increase the health service’s budget by £326 million.

Earlier on Friday, the head of the Health and Social Care Board, John Compton had warned that the health budget would require a substantial increase failing which nearly 4,000 jobs could be lost. McGimpsey agreed with Compton, saying that the health department would require an additional amount of at least £100 million.

“There will also be issues around the voluntary and community sector. I have been warning for some time about job losses, about closures and about radical changes for the way we deliver service. I am looking at a budget that next year, starting on 1 April, I am £100m short”, McGimpsey added.
