Reality TV star Nicole Richie has been sent to prison for four days after pleading guilty to driving under the influence (DUI) on Friday.

The 25-year-old arrived at a Glendale courthouse with her boyfriend Joel Madden.

The actress’ attorney, Shawn Chapman Holley, entered a plea of guilty when her case was called. She was then sentenced to 96 hours in custody.

"The judge did not give her special treatment. She is given the same option that any person who pleads guilty to this charge to serve in county or county jail," Us Weekly magazine quoted the spokesperson of the Los Angeles District Attorney, Jane Robinson, as saying.

Robinson added that Richie had to complete her sentence some time in the next 60 days.

"She just has to show proof of completion by September 28," said Robinson.

According to the terms and conditions of Richie's probation, she must enrol in a drug and alcohol program within 21 days and pay a fine of 2,048 dollars.

Richie was arrested on December 11 after witnesses reported her vehicle heading the wrong way down a California highway. She failed a field sobriety test and admitted to having smoked marijuana and to taking Vicodin.

Richie later pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence of liquor in February. She had a prior DUI conviction in June 2003.
