The CSIRO in Australia has tested nine people for the deadly Hendra virus in Queensland. Among the nine people is a 10-year-old, whose pet horse died of the disease.
"It's something you always think happens to other people, so this is a reality check," said the secretary of the Tewantin Noosa Pony Club, Sue Boor. "We'd like a vaccine against Hendra and we can't understand why that wouldn't happen when human life is at risk."

Queensland's chief health officer, Jeannette Young, confirmed that preliminary tests have cleared six of the nine people and that they need not stay away from home or work as long as they did not develop symptoms.

"If a person develops any symptoms at all, we ask them urgently to go to their GP, contact the public health unit or go to their local hospital and we will test them immediately," she added.

People have been asked to stay away from sick horses.
