No harm in reducing prenatal check up to 3 - 6 times says WHO report

A world health organisation report says that women with low risk pregnancies, who live in the developing nations, can safely cut down their vists to the doctor during pregnancy to 3 - 6 times during pregnancy instead of the prescribed 8 - 11 visits as in the developed nations.

However, these women are not more at risk than women who had more prenatal visits to have a low birth weight baby, or have anemia during pregnancy, or spend longer in the hospital than women who had more prenatal visits the study says.

The report finds its place in the May 19th issue of The Lancet.

The fewer visits appear to be safe and could save money in countries strapped for healthcare resources, according to Dr. Jose Villar of WHO in Geneva, Switzerland, and colleagues.

The researchers studied nearly 25000 women in Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Cuba and Argentina.

This report adds weight to the notion that if the pregnant woman has had safe deliveries in the past and if she can take care of herself well in the run up to the delivery, she can actually cut down the number of pre natal visits from 8 - 11 times to 3 - 6 times.

The idea is not to discourage a pregnant woman from going to a doctor. Atleast 3 - 6 visits are a must. But to cut costs, time and energy it is a good idea to lessen the number of visits.
