Polio drops were administered to the children in the target age group (0–5 years) during the second round of Pulse Polio Immunisation (PPI) held in Visakhapatnam last Sunday. District Collector N. Yuvaraj launched the programme at China Waltair Dispensary by administering polio drops to a few children. The official said that no new cases of polio were reported from anywhere in the district during the last two years.
A total of 4.38 lakh children below 5 years of age were administered polio drops in the first phase, achieving cent percent target in the district.
According to authorities, a total 3,632 PPI centres were set up in the district and 7,033 mobile teams formed to undertake door-to-door surveys. An additional 14,528 persons were appointed and 98 mobile vaccination teams were also formed to administer drops to uncovered children in the target age group.
“Special teams were posted at bus terminals, railway stations and junctions to administer polio drops to children on the move. A total of 363 supervisors were appointed and cold storage chains were set up at 87 places to prevent the vaccine from getting damaged,” said State Nodal Officer for PPI and Joint Director of Urban Health Mission Aruna Devi.
