According to the recent research conducted by Dr. Michael Thun of the American Cancer Society it was found that death rates due to lung cancer among non smoking women wee less. On the other hand men who never smoked had higher lung cancer death rates than female. This study was conducted among a million Americans. Lung cancer is by far the biggest cancer killer in the world, and it will kill 162,460 people this year in the United States alone.
This report is contradicting the result that women outnumber men among lung cancer. It appears that there are far more women (16.2 million) than men (6.4 million) over the age of 60 who never smoked. But there is a small but significant risk revolving around the death due to lung cancer among non smoking women. One such case is that of Dana Reeve, a non-smoker and widow of Superman star Christopher Reeve. Statistics show that about 80-90 % of the 174,470 new cases of lung cancer in US were caused by smoking. The other causes of death among non smokers in US include secondhand smoke, asbestos exposure and radon gas.
