Acting tough on the medicos who had resorted to the strike against OBC reservation in educational institutions, Health Minister Anbumani Ramadoss today said that not paying salary to doctors for the strike period was not a punishment.

'It is not a punitive action. No work, no pay. If court orders to release the salaries, we will do so,' he told reporters when asked to respond to protests by medicos at the AIIMS for not getting their salaries despite the Supreme Court assurance that no action would be taken against them.

Ramadoss said the apex court had said that the doctors should not be punished and not giving the salaries was not a punishmment. 'I don't want this (releasng salaries) to become a precedent. I am not above law'.

To a question on increasing seats in Central medical institutions, Ramadoss said the government was in a position to increase the number of seats in AIIMS, JIPMER and PGI and time needed to increase the infrastructure in other institutions.

Replying to a question on protests against his appeal to film celebrities to desist from coke advertisements, Ramadoss said this was only his personal appeal to them.

He, however, said colas and junk food were harmful to the health of the people.
