Numerous Reasons behind the Death of a Woman during Pregnancy and Birth

Statistics show that about 8 million women suffer pregnancy-related complications and over half a million die every year. Dr A. Meting Gulmezoglu, of the WHO's department of reproductive health and research said that hemorrhage was the leading cause of maternal deaths in Africa and Asia. Hypertension disorders represent the highest cause of death in Latin America and the Caribbean. This study was published in the medical journal The Lancet.

HIV/AIDS accounted for about 6 % of the maternal deaths in Africa. Anemia and obstructed labor is the cause of death in one-tenth of deaths in Asia. Deaths related to abortions were highest more than 30% in Latin America and the Caribbean. Gulmezoglu said that this statistics is an early call for an increased attention to provide services that can help women avoid unwanted birth.

In developed countries, the leading causes of women dying during childbirth are complications related to Caesarian section delivery and anesthesia. The statistic and the data were prepared after through analysis of more than 35,000 maternal deaths. Various measures are needed to prevent these deaths and hence proper diagnosis and treatment facilities can save a number of lives.
