71-year-old Anand Rao, a nurse in the Leicester NHS Trust has been sacked after he asked a heart patient to turn to God to relieve stress. Rao, who had 40 years of experience, gave out this advice in a role-play session during training.
He asked a woman, who was playing the role of a patient with a serious heart condition, to attend Church to relieve her stress. Rao has been sacked and is now contemplating legal recourse against his employers. He is being supported by Christian Legal Centre (CLC), whose director, Andrea Minichiello, expressed disbelief over the Trust's actions, "How is it possible that a nurse who has served the public for 40 years should find himself dismissed because in a training exercise he advised someone to go to church?"
However the Trusts says Rao has breached the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s code of conduct multiple times and has not reformed even when given every chance to do so. Rao "showed little regard for the standards of care and professionalism that is expected of him as a nurse," revealed Kate Bradley, from the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
