Nurses have shut down 800 public hospital beds in Victoria as they press their demand for pay hike, while parties are locked in negotiations at Fair Work Australia. Nurses have demanded for a 18.5% pay rise over 4-years, with no changes to the current nurse-to-patient ratios.Though 1 in 3 beds will remain closed, the nurses assured that this will not endanger the patient's lives.
The dispute became increasingly bitter when State Cabinet documents were leaked to the media. The documents revealed that the nursing budget will be cut down and some nurses with be replaced by less qualified assistants.
Health Minister David Davis has refused to outline the Government's plan to deal with the situation.
