Providing a nutritious diet to cancer patients is vital since a large number of the cancer survivors die due to poor nutrition rather than the disease, a new report to be published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association reveals. Treatment for cancer lowers the immunity of cancer survivors are they are at a higher risk of developing other chronic and in some cases fatal diseases such as diabetes, bone loss or heart complications.
Researchers from the UAB School of Health Professions, University of Minnesota and the University of California suggest that the risk could be reduced substantially by providing a nutrition rich diet to the cancer survivors.
One of the most important goals for cancer survivors is to quickly achieve a healthy weight. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits and whole grains should be stressed upon as well as a daily exercise routine of at least half an hour. Red and processed meats as well as alcohol should be given a big no and eating nutrition rich food items is recommended rather than opting for supplements.
