Obese mothers more prone to Pregnancy Risks

Researchers said that overweight and obese mothers suffer more pregnancy related complications and their babies develop medical problems at birth.

Researchers at the Public Affairs Committee of the Teratology Society published a paper in the journal Birth Defects Research Part A: Clinical and Molecular Teratology.

In this paper they said that overweight and obese mothers suffer more pregnancy related complications and their babies develop medical problems at birth.

This paper talked in detail about the problems and risks undertaken by the obese mothers.

It is stated that they have increased risk of infertility and suffer from hypertension, gestational diabetes and thromboembolic (clot-related) events.

There are in need of a Caesarean section, take more time in recovering from childbirth, and have higher prenatal medical costs.

Apart from the mothers they put their baby’s life in danger. Such babies are more likely to be admitted to neonatal intensive care units and have an increased risk of suffering from neural tube defects.

Body mass index (BMI) plays a very important role during pregnancy. If it is equal to or greater than 30 there is double the risk of having an affected child.

Hence the researchers advices the women folks to go in for weight-reduction programs before conception. Pregnant woman should have a proper balanced diet and the doctors should be consulted about the exact caloric intakes and exercise regime followed by a pregnant woman.

They also said in case of women undergoing weight loss procedure then they should conceive after surgery-related weight loss has stabilized.
