Obese Women Do Not Get Adequate Maternity Facilities

The Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries has revealed that maternity facilities for obese women are woefully inadequate in England.

The Centre for Maternal and Child Enquiries has revealed that maternity facilities for obese women are woefully inadequate in England.

Necessary equipments like extra-wide operating tables and beds are not available in most UK hospitals and furthermore obese pregnant women were not getting the right advice and assessments, the report said.

"Obesity has gone up so fast that services are struggling to keep up. I think services could be improved to provide more appropriate care." said lead researcher Dr Jo Modder, adding that such neglect could put women at risk.

The results of the survey are made available after polling 320 maternity units and midwife services across the country. Reacting to these findings, a Department of Health spokeswoman said that the UK was one of the safest countries to give birth in.
