While China is maintaining a strict one-child policy for couples, a wealthy family from the Guangdong province in south China have paid more than $160,000 to have eight kids. The details of the family have not been revealed but Chinese officials said that the woman gave birth to two children while two surrogates were illegally used to give birth to six more babies through in vitro fertilization.
The children were born in September and October last year and the family has hired 11 nannies to take care of the babies. The mother has been nicknamed “octomom” by the Chinese media and Guangdong Health Department said that the case is being investigated by the officials.
Liang Zhongtang, who is a demography expert at the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, said that the case highlighted the need for the government to review its strict family planning laws. Speaking to the Associated Press, Zhongtang said, “People are very interested in the policy these days and the need for changes to it. A lot of people think it should have been dropped a long time ago, or relaxed at least.”
