Only Government Hospital to Perform Liver Transplant in India- Stanley

Chennai based Stanley Medical College and Hospital is the only government hospital in India to perform successful liver transplants. On Wednesday they celebrated the second anniversary of Stanley's first successful liver transplant. In the past 2years 20 liver transplants have been carried out at the hospital. Beneficiaries of these transplants have been patients from the working class who could have otherwise never been able to afford the expenses of the operation as liver transplant is among the most expensive surgical procedures which cost between Rs. 30-35 lakh. The success rate of these transplants is also remarkable with 15 out of the 20 liver transplant patients being alive and healthy. The duration of the operation has also been brought down to 8 hours from 18 hours time that was required in 2009. Head of the institute for surgical gastroenterology Dr. R. Surendran has credited the 75% success rate of liver transplants to the combined efforts of technicians, doctors, nurses and other hospital staff.

The hospital has been successful in getting down the rate of infections by 80%. Hospital authorities make it a point to disinfect the operation theatre and ward before each transplant. There has been increased awareness about organ transplants among the common people with more number of people coming forward to donate the organs of their loved ones after their death.
