Impulse Dynamics has announced that the first implant of its proprietary medical device called the Optimizer was successfully performed by Dr. Moeen Saleem, Midwest Heart Specialists Electrophysiologist at Edward Heart Hospital in Naperville, Illinois. The device is used as a treatment for heart failure.
The procedure is a part of the FIX-HF-5 clinical trial and Midwest Heart Foundation happens to be a clinical trial site. Dr. Maria Rosa Costanzo, Midwest Heart Specialists Cardiologist is leading the current study. The Optimizer System is basically designed to send electrical impulses to the heart in the event of heart failure. Heart failure is a disease that affects over 5 million Americans and 15 million people over the world. This happens when the heart is unable to pump enough blood to meet the energy needs of the body. It is usually treated with drugs and electrical devices such as pacemakers and implanted defibrillators.
